Why do we like this?
Check out this dreamy Broken Social Scene track circa 2011. It's a Modest Mouse cover, with soft sax and sweet-sounding piano against a drone-y guitar.
For those of you living under a rock, Broken Social Scene is a Canadian indie/jazz/post-rock supergroup consisting of a handful of famous band members, like Feist, Jason Collet, and Emily Haines, among others. They are headed by Kevin Drew and Brendan Canning, and are known for their musical talents, good looks, and super powers. Like going invisible. They've sort of been on a hiatus since 2011...
No more live gigs where you can indulge in their awesomeness, but you can sit on YouTube listening to this song ad infinitum, pretending like you're hanging out in their garage. The video itself boasts a personal feeling that makes your heart melt. Shot in black and white, it's a house jam in which Kevin Drew, Brendan Canning and co. meet the Voice Project, an organization whose mission is to utilize the power of music to affect positive social change, alleviate suffering, and promote human rights. Personally, I think Kevin Drew's laid-back attitude alone could affect positive social change. Just look at the way he rocks out. What'd I say? Super powers.
Most recently, BSS made a surprise appearance at Toronto music festival Field Trip in June to celebrate their 10 year anniversary. They also produced a track called "Mother Mother" for Canadian singer-songwriter Kate McGarrigle's (mother to the singer-songwriter/composer Rufus Wainwright) posthumous album, Sing Me the Songs: Celebrating the Works of Kate McGarrigle. Nothing else on the horizon. Uh-uh, baby they ain't got no plan...
