Sounds like:
Beirut,
Sun Ra,
Duke Ellington
Why do we like this?
Okay, so this probably won't be everyone's cup of tea, but it's pretty excellent, so give it a shot. Strings, clarinets, brass, and rhythm link up with sociopolitical futuristic vocals for something funky and fun. A twist on the classic big band jazz from a multicultural set in London.
"The Earthlings" is off a new theatrical release from London-based orchestra mimikamakmurticensemble, led up by composer Mak Murtić. It sounds like Sun Ra meets Duke Ellington, and other reviewers are calling it "Balkan space jazz." The album's concept is that a bunch of Martians are exploring Earth when their spaceship is hit by some metal from floating artificial garbage. Or something like that. Descriptive enough for you? Just enjoy the jazz.
If you dig this as much as I do, you can learn about the band and the album on their website.
