Why do we like this?
Try to pinpoint the Midnight Juggernauts genre at your own peril. Their epic, expansive sound could often pass as a sci-fi film score, while at other times it might give a listener the impression of a well-produced party track.
Based out of Melbourne, Australia, they commenced activity in 2004. The original members, Vincenzi Vendetta and Andrew Szekeres, met in high school and released two EPs, Self Titled (2005) and Secrets of the Universe (2006) before Daniel Striker joined the group (also in 2006) to complete the triumvirate.
In 2007, the group dropped their first full-length album, Dystopia (domestically), to rave reviews, before setting off on a world tour. First, they were personally requested by Justice (who declared them their new favorite artist) to support them on their North America tour, before pottering around Europe and the UK with acts such as !!!, Klaxon, and Holy Fuck on the CMJ Festival tour. They then returned home, headlining the Big Day Out Festival alongside Rage Against the Machine, Bjork, and Arcade Fire.
Following the international release of Dystopia, they set off on another world tour, appearing at more festivals including (among others) Coachella, Primavera Sound, and Glastonbury.
Finally finishing their globetrotting, the group returned to Australia in 2008 to begin work on their latest album, the Crystal Axis, which was released in mid-2010. Hiding away in a beach house on the Eastern coast of Australia, they put all that they had learned on tour to good use, producing a complexly brilliant record, full of progressive, psychedelic sounds.
"Vital Signs," the lead single, is probably the most radio friendly of this iridescent recording, with a driving chorus combining with varying luminous sounds. Following that track, "Lara Versus the Savage Pack" provides a more introspective option. The tracks meld seamlessly together in a haunting, spacey progression. This album is 2001: A Space Odyssey in music.
If you're in the mood for some deep self-analysis, or alternatively, if you just want to stare blankly at a wall, then this is the perfect music for you. This is an amazing album from an amazing group.
