House producer Midland's work normally falls into part of a tech house sound currently shared by a number of British producers, like SCB, Dark Sky, and George Fitzgerald, all of whom are heavily influenced by Berlin techno.
"Before We Leave" takes a different direction entirely, instead visiting Detroit, another one of electronic music's great cities. This track recalls the string-driven compositions of Detroit house stars like Andres and Moodymann.
With the tech-influenced bassline left in there, Midland has hit on a pretty unique sound. Interestingly, techno first originated in Detroit, while the melodic Detroit house style took its routes from the city's Motown movement. So in many ways, "Before We Leave" is the marriage of Detroit's two sounds, just made by a producer from the North of England.
