The Smoke and Mist Make for Good Companions
Mick Jenkins' "Scottie Pippen" immediately creates a sense of diaspora and pure hip-hop soul.
I was slow-bopping to this track the moment the repeating sample kicked in. It's a track filled with so much Inner-city diaspora, it not only sounds like the crooked alleys of the dark streets, but it also smells and moves like pure urban smoke. It weaves and dissolves like rain on the heat-beaten road. It bounces and reflects the many windows it passes - a slow drive of R&B and soul mixed into the vocal sounds of someone not only hurting, but also giving words to the images.
Overall it's a beautifully narrated experience, that won't let go for a while.
