“Cross My Heart” is the latest release off of the experimental new album from Melody’s Echo Chamber, Bon Voyage. And experiment is exactly what Melody Prochet does on this track. At nearly seven minutes long, Prochet was able to take a kitchen sink approach to “Cross My Heart” that left few of her sonic ideas on the cutting room floor.
The song opens with a Bjork-like whisper over a 1970s string arrangement and timpani drums. Prochet switches to French around the two-minute mark, as jazzy flutes trill and a percussion-heavy beat drives the track forward. At 4:30, Prochet could easily be the opening lounge act at the Tranquility Based Hotel and Casino. One minute later, “Cross My Heart” is being driven home by a dark cinematic soundscape worthy of Lana Del Ray.
When it all ended, I was left confused but eager to hear more of Bon Voyage, out now on Fat Possum Records. Check out our review of the first single “Breath In, Breath Out” for more.
