While there have been exceptions, I haven't associated too well with female vocalists historically. I'm not the only one, though -- check out Triple J's Hottest 100 list from last year, it's completely male dominated. My sister will claim that it's society's fault that I'm sexist (I promise I'm not!), but perhaps I just haven't listened to enough.
Sydney songstress Meg Mac (McInerny) is one of a slew of new artists quickly setting me in the right direction. Raised on a diet of Motown and soul music, she's quickly developed a strong supporter base locally on the back of her single "Known Better" (available for free download on her
SoundCloud).
Starting almost timidly, the track quickly turns into a stirring power-pop ballad. The simple accompaniment is all that's required given the strength of her vocals. Similar to the likes of Kimbra or Regina Spektor, it's hard to believe such a small girl can produce so much soul and sass.
Thanks Meg Mac, you're awesome. Girls rule.
