Why do we like this?
Mean Creek embody the element of "epic rock" that, no matter how old I get, will always make me want to put my fist in the air and start pumpin'. I mean this in a "HELL YEAH STADIUM" rock kind of way (versus an "oh god, Jersey Shore" way), and think it speaks to the best of Boston, Bruce, and all of their compatriots.
The Boston band's new EP, Hemophiliac, nails the kind of swelling, driving brand of rock 'n' roll that gets you at your core. It elicits an emotional response without necessarily delving into complexities, and that's alright. Their sound speaks to a kind of bombastic self assurance that intoxicates with it's cockiness.
The band evokes a kind of mid-90s alternative rock that's too pretty to be grunge but too hard to be pop. This shows especially on "No One Has To Know," a headbanger rife with wailing guitar and pounding drums. It's not revolutionary, but it's a kind of music that keeps getting made for a reason: because it's loud, because it's good, because dammit, it's epic.
You can download the four-song EP for free on Mean Creek's Bandcamp page.
