Throughout my travels I've had the opportunity to hear lots of great music, and South Africa's Mean Black Mamba are no exception. Made up of Guy Collins and James van Minnen, the duo recently released their debut, self-titled album -- and the live show they put on to celebrate the occasion was quite a memorable one.
With a guitar and a drum set, the band blended delta blues vibes with distinctly South African influences, the combination of which made for one of the more unique blues rock performances I've had the pleasure of watching. Throughout their ~three hour set, Mean Black Mamba invited numerous guests onto stage, including a didgeridoo cameo courtesy of Ronan Skillen, and an absolutely epic Xhosa contribution from Craigieji Makhosi (
Quite A White Ou).
Of course, the band were there to promote the release of their new album
Mean Black Mamba, which you can
stream in full on SoundCloud. The recorded version does a good job of capturing the energy and power this formidable duo possess -- with the title track serving as a perfect introduction. My only wish is that some of these aforementioned guest appearances had made the cut for the recorded version.
