Why do we like this?
Del Bel is a band lauded for their chilling compositions. But their cover of Mazzy Star's "Look On Down From The Bridge" is anything but brooding.
On their rendition, Del Bel strips away the wistfulness and the languor. Gone are the lethargic drums and the drawls of a mournful organ. In their place are swelling synths, mechanized beats, and flickering alien beeps that evoke a cosmic tone, grounded only by the break's crooning trumpet.
It's an ambient sound without a vestige of the noir aesthetics that brought the band their acclaim, and that's the point. Because this is more than just a cover; it's Del Bel's statement of change, a shift in musical direction that has come to shape their forthcoming third record. And it's got me curious.
