“Preteen” is the song I wish I had when I was a preteen. It's something I could see myself blasting in my bedroom whenever I was having a bad day. Maya Lucia takes all the feelings (and hormones) you experience while growing up, and perfectly explains why all of a sudden you're lashing out.
The lush guitar chords over the fierce drum beat is likely to get stuck in your head all day. Lucia hooks the listener in softly and refuses to let go, especially as the song gains momentum.
While some of the instrumentals definitely fall on the pop side, her raw, genuine and untouched vocals highlight her rock influence. Instead of trying to hide any imperfections, she carefreely embraces them, which makes the song authentic and hard to replicate.
Her style feels fiery, girly and badass all at once, reminding me heavily of other indie, pop-rock queens like Sidney Gish and Snail Mail.
This track is from Lucia’s EP,lashing out.
