The recent release of Jamie xx's take on I'm New Here has certainly caused a lot of hype around The xx button twiddler. Some of his excellent remixes have received even more exposure - and deservedly as far as I'm concerned. However, one track I'm surprised to see has kept the veil of anonymity is his collaboration with UK Garage legend, Maxwell D.
This track pretty much ignores their collective garage roots, instead preferring to go for something of a house vibe, with Caribbean influences. Maxwell D's voice sounds as if it's autotuned - but it's not. And normally, that would put me off, but in this one particular instance, it sounds really good. The accompanying string section provides a lovely backdrop and his voice carries the song as he laments his mistakes in a past relationship. Listening to this, it's easy to feel where he's coming from. It feels desperate yet uplifting simultaneous, in a bizarre, but highly enjoyable combination.
