You know Mavis Staples even if you don't recognize her name. The soulstress was part of the seminal soul group The Staples Singers. The family-turned-group recorded a number of classic tunes that defined a generation. If you weren't a 70's baby, you certainly have heard some cheesy reappropriation of hits like "Respect Yourself" and "I'll Take You There" during the opening or closing credits of G-rated saturday morning fodder. Get your money Staples family!
Anyhow, I digress. Mavis is an elder but nowhere near done. She's returning with a new album, Livin' On A High Note, and her lead single is co-written by none other than Justin Vernon from Bon Iver, this generation's most soulful caucasian. Listen up and zone out.
