You know that feeling when you’re really sweaty and gross after a long run or hot day in the sun, and you sit yourself down on a bench in a park, and this cool breeze wafts your way and it feels like a bunch of angels descended from heaven and are hugging you with their cold wings?
That’s how I feel when I’m listening to Maudlin Strangers. I know, weird, but the only way I can explain what happens to your brain when listening to musical prodigy Jake Hays, who produces, records, engineers, and mixes his music. Hays plays every (yes, every) instrument on his tracks -- and if that wasn’t enough, he offers up dark and beautifully distinct vocals.
Today, “Overdose” is making its way on Indie Shuffle, acoustic and electronic goodness served up just for you. It’s dark indie rock in its purest form, layering eerie synths with faint raindrops in the background. The chorus hits you like a wall of soft feathers; it’s shockingly good yet perfectly simple.
And if you thought that wasn’t enough, Hays is also deliciously hilarious. Like that time he tweeted, “Hiccuping with a toothpick in your mouth is a dangerous game.” Relevant? No. Witty? Very.
Take a bite of “Overdose” and you’re left craving more, but don’t worry fellow Indie Shufflers, I may have more MS coming your way later this week. Until then, go ahead and overdose on this track. Pun intended.
