Why do we like this?
Excellent DIY/noise by way of Freddy Ruppert, who shared how addicting Marnie Stern was on his Facebook page. Her unconventional sound, breathy voice and slick finger-tapping is enough to make any indie rock lover swoon.
I'll be honest, I hadn't heard of Marnie before. I was surprised to read that back in '07 the New York Times called her debut "the year's most exciting rock 'n' roll album" and that she was also featured in Pitchfork's "The 50 Best Albums Of 2008." She seems like something else. And one listen is enough to know they weren't kidding. A killer guitarist with some serious lyrical skills, she's like a female version of Don Caballero.
Her newest album drops March 19, 2013. There's only two tracks out now, but I can already tell it's going to be a great listen. I'm looking forward to hearing more. Until then, you listen via her Bandcamp.
