"For Real" is the first song I've heard of Aussie newcomer Mallrat, and I've instantly fallen in love with it.
Over a piano loop, finger clicks and hip-hop influenced beats, the 17-year-old seamlessly transitions from rapping to singing throughout the song. Telling Stereogum, “I’m not sure if "For Real" is a happy song or a sad song but I hope people can attach it to some memory and decide for themselves,” Mallrat's charm and talent shine over the Tigerilla + Casper Zazz production.
While she's been described as a cross between Grimes and Charlie XCX, I hear a little Kate Nash in her delivery and observant lyrics, as well as a bit of up and coming London MC Nadia Rose.
Either way, Mallrat is one artist you want to see your eye on.
