Why do we like this?
A good friend of mine introduced me to Majical Cloudz a few months ago, and I immediately became a fan, but it wasn't until I saw them live while at SXSW a few weekends ago that I found a whole new appreciation for them.
The Canadian duo began their set under slightly dimmed lights and a very attentive crowd. Lead singer Devon Welsh stood humbly in front of the microphone, thanking attendees for their shout-outs while awaiting the cue from Matthew Otto on the keys to start his delivery of what was to be a very honest and sincere performance. With no smoke and mirrors, hard bass drops, etc., this performance may have been the one that single-handedly sticks out in the forefront of my memory for SXSW 2013.
While the lyrical and melodic style of Majical Cloudz is somewhat dark at times, it is a form that's tangible and honest. They recently dropped "Childhood's End," which was their opening song this year at SXSW. It was an interesting choice as an opener since it is more somber, but is nonetheless captivating.
If you get the chance to see Majical Cloudz live, do it. "Childhood's End" comes off their album Impersonator, which will be released via Matador on May 21, 2013.
