Mai Lan? Oh yes. Yes, you know that name. This is the French-Vietnamese pop artist who was featured throughout M83’s recent Junk. Mai Lan met the dreamy Anthony Gonzalez during an intensive songwriting camp, and the collaborations came quickly. Mai Lan was featured on four Junk tracks, including the single “Go!,” and toured most of the world with the band.
Now, she is gearing up to release her debut album this spring. Her first single, “Vampire,” was co-written by Gonzalez in his LA studio.
“He sent me a demo, and I started working on the lyrics and melodies while I was in the plane,” the singer told Stereogum. “The chorus came right away, like an evidence. It’s great when it’s like this, as if the song had to come out and it no longer depends on you. Kind of mystic.”
The lyrics to “Vampire” are pretty silly:
And just call your grandmama
and all the friends you got.
I’m the new dracula.
I need a hangover.
I’m gonna fill this cup,
with some of your ketchup.
I’m gonna drink you up,
until the final drop.
While I’m not madly in love with the song, I do have such a soft spot for everything Gonzalez touches. I can’t not share it. The beat is harmless and catchy. The video is ridiculous. You will enjoy it all.
