There’s a lot to process in Buscando by the Austria-based duo Madrid de los Austrias: from the Spanish flamenco roots to its stylized electronics and jazzy flourishes, the song feels like it’s squeezed miles of musicianship into a few impressive minutes.
In the remixed version, crafted by Karuan and Circus, the lyrics, todos en español, are playfully wrapped around a funky downbeat evocative of turntables playing lounge music late into the night. In fact, the first time I heard the song was around 2am emanating from a party in the East Village. A newfound favorite had been just a short Shazam away.
If the duo’s namesake is the old city center of Madrid established in 1619 during Spain’s “Golden Age”, then their artistry may age to become a gold standard in the nu jazz genre.
