The songs on Kim Pflaum's forthcoming solo debut EP as Madeira, Bad Humors, are about "letting go of negative thoughts and embracing the wealth of positive possibilities."
On the first single "Let Me Down," for instance, the former Yumi Zouma singer doesn't dwell on the despair that comes with disappointment, but rather understands it's something that will eventually be worked through. And when you listen to the music itself, it's clear how much the dusky electronics reflects her averse to wallowing.
"Manipulator" is a little more bittersweet thematically, but like the previous single, Madeira's musings doesn't fog the tone. If "Let Me Down" glows with a sunset warmth, then "Manipulator" is a song glistening with kaleidoscopic effect. Madiera's flair for iridescent melodies is undeniable here, but the track is as slick as it is lucid with pulsating beats dropping in the chorus and a bassline grooving like it's the coolest cat in the disco. When the rhythms are that smooth, the urge to tear up the dance floor is inevitable.
