Why do we like this?
Here's a pretty cool track that closed out the latest mix from The Vibe Guide podcast.
I had it playing in an adjacent room and it was the melody that drew me back to take a closer listen. From a distance, the inflection behind the "Rhinestone Smile" vocal flashed me back to my 7th grade school bus; hearing "Spiderwebs" for the first time, back in the 90s, when Gwen Stefani was the coolest girl on alternative radio.
Upon closer inspection, Nikoto's vocals are really nothing like Stefani at all (cool story, huh?), but combined with Madeaux's production"”untainted freshness and unadulterated genre exploration"”the attitude is on par.
"Rhinestone Smile" is slow-tempo, grimy glitch with a tech angle and a bass foundation. In other words, it's cool; it's it's own thing.
