Why do we like this?
It seems like forever since we've had new music from one of my favorite local acts, Made in Japan. While they released an album last year (their AMP-nominated debut Sights and Sounds), when you really fall for a band 12 months can seem like a very long time. Fresh off a performance at this year's Great Escape Festival in the UK, the Sydney four-piece have announced details of their forthcoming album, Tame All Those Thoughts.
The day has arrived for the album's first single, with "Follow the Fool" to be debuted. I've mentioned in other reviews recently that I've noticed a slight trend in bands releasing long songs -- like really long ones. The likes of Jagwar Ma and World's End Press have now been joined by Made in Japan, with their latest single topping out at 8:46. That might seem long and tedious to some, but when it's this good, you don't want it to finish -- no matter how long it stretches out.
Recorded and mixed independently in their home studio, it showcases the band's growth as music constructors; it's a track that has been pieced together expertly. Spacey and emotionally driven, goosebumps are guaranteed, with Made in Japan's typically drifting riffs and haunting vocals (from drummer/vocalist James Cooney) topped off with sections of extraterrestrial samples.
With anticipation often comes disappointment, but if this is an indication of what to expect on Tame All Those Thoughts, this might be an early favorite for one of my top albums of the year.
