Why do we like this?

Over the past weekend, the music industry lost one of its brightest stars with the news that Mac Miller passed away in his home at the age of 26.

Mac Miller, born Malcolm McCormick, was a Pittsburgh rapper who rose to fame with songs like “Nikes on my Feet” and “Donald Trump.” His 2011 debut album Blue Slide Park was the first independent album to hit #1 on the Billboard charts in 16 years. At only 19 years old, and already at the top of the charts, Mac Miller was poised to become one of hip-hop’s hottest acts. Seven years and four albums later, Mac Miller did not disappoint.

On the song “Self Care," Mac talks about his struggles with addiction, depression, and public perception. However, instead of the song being depressing and sad, “Self Care” is inspiring and hopeful. Mac sings about accepting that he has made mistakes and that he is willing work on himself in order to become a better person. Mac’s delivery is fragile and earnest. The production is not overly produced, complementing Mac’s voice and message perfectly. Though the first half of the song is great, it's when the beat switches halfway that the song becomes whole.

Like the song, Mac never stuck to one sound. He never settled -- always evolved and strived for improvement. His growth and evolution as an artist, and as a person, has been a sight to behold. “Self Care” can be found in Mac’s final album Swimming, in my opinion his best work. I recommend everyone listen to it, it’s one of the best albums of 2018.
