London-based all-female outfit M A R I N E formed when solo singers Cara Sebastian (a familiar name from the Indie Shuffle archives) and Ruby Jack bonded over fireworks and rum in a festival field.
Joined by bassist Beth Dariti and drummer Kaja Magsam, the band released their debut EP -- which featured, amongst others, the haunting “Selkie” -- back in February. They now return with their new single, “Sirens,” taken from their follow-up EP to be released later this year.
Drawing both on Sebastian’s brooding female influences, from PJ Harvey to Ani Di Franco, and Ruby’s striking icons (Billie Holiday, Annie Lennox), the talented four-piece have developed a strong alternative sound that incorporates inspired lyrical concepts, from mythological creatures to personal experiences.
With their innate ability to craft whimsical tunes brimming with killer vocal hooks and flawless harmonies, M A R I N E are rare, raw, and really rather beautiful.
