Lyman Woodard Organization's Saturday Night Special is a diggers record. The Detroit LP packs the kind of artfully arranged jazz-funk hybrid that has hypnotized hip-hop era record sleuths.
It's one of DJ House Shoes' favorite records. So much so that the heralded Motown crate creator finessed his own imprint, Street Corner Music, into licensing the rights to "Joy Road," one of the standout cuts in an LP full of standout cuts.
Renowned record collector, DJ, and culture maker Amir runs 180 Proof Records, the imprint that holds the rights to Saturday Night Special and many other Strata Record gems.
Shoes' plan was delightfully genius. After inaugurating his flip sessions by inviting beat makers to flip a sample and pressing up the winners on a 45, Shoes reined the program in a bit. Now by invitation only, Street Corner Music's flips are celebrating music worth knowing and then using said pieces to literally create a musical bridge to the now.
"Joy Road" was given to Nottz, an extraterrestrial who deals in the realm of sound, posing as a native of Virginia. Nottz culls the most emotive and exciting parts of Mr. Woodard's morose gem and creates a two-headed beat monster that's already cemented in this beat nerds memory.
