Why do we like this?
I'm really not sure how I feel about Lupe Fiasco these days. The Chicago rapper's debut, Lupe Fiasco's Food & Liquor, was at the corner stone of skate-rap, and its follow up, Lupe Fiasco's The Cool, cemented Fiasco as one of hip-hop's most promising MCs... but then it all went down hill. Lasers was a both a commercial and critical failure, with his label Atlantic Records not even wanting to release it, while last years Food & Liquor II: The Great American Rap Album Pt. 1, featured Australian Guy Sebastian, which is reason enough not to listen.
So, two great albums and two poor albums leaves Fiasco at the crossroads, but I've got to hand it to the kid, he's doing his best to get back in the game. When Kendrick Lamar dropped that verse, Fiasco was one of the few rappers to drop multiple responses, all with varying degrees of success. He's also been big on rapping over other artists beats, which brings us to "Pound Of Flesh/Paris Tokyo 2," Fiasco's take on Drake's "Pound Cake/Paris Morton Music 2."
Fiasco raps about everything from Bob Barker to pooper-scoopers, while ending the track with a shout out to Chicago's finest, including legends Common and Kanye West, and newcomers Chance The Rapper and Chief Keef.
If Fiasco can put as much effort into his next album as he does his freestyles, then he might just get back on track with his career.
