Why do we like this?

Lucy Rose is a friend of Brits Bombay Bicycle Club and a rising star in the UK indie scene. Featured in the "Shuffle" video and lending vocals to "Flaws," she is currently touring Britain promoting her single "Middle of the Bed," a reflective, sombre song, reminiscent of fellow young folk-pop pin-up Laura Marling.

It is for her writing though that Lucy Rose is lumped in with Marling and often compared to her introspective, softly sung style. "Middle of the Bed" has an autobiographical narrative that would feel right at home in Marling's catalogue.

Yet, hoping to find a middle-ground between the female pop and folk genres, her despondent, jaded voice is generally accompanied by more upbeat, hopeful music. Quiet and introspective, Rose manages to remain the right side of mawkish and banal, infusing a delicate charm into her voice to retain listeners' attention.

Touching ballads can be easily over-looked and brushed aside in the saturated world of acoustic music. However when song-craft is so self-evidently as good as this, it is possible to see the humble acoustic pop song as fresh, tingling and delightful as we've ever heard it. A voice for the future, surely.
