In a congested Melbourne beats scene, Lucian Blomkamp is an act that stands out, and one that is very likely to blow up in the second half of the year. Just 19 years old, the talented youngster has released his debut, self-titled EP, and is already being touted as one of Australia's most promising artists.
I'm always interested to find out what kind of musical backgrounds electronic artists have to see if certain elements stand out in their music. Classically trained, Blomkamp was originally drawn to electronics because of the endless possibilities the medium provided -- and you can see that in his diverse take on the genre. His music is somewhat dark, but "You and Me" is one of the more somber numbers on the EP. Featuring the perfectly suited vocals of Rosebud Leach (his girlfriend -- awww!), it's a staggered and introspective track which expands through detailed arrangements.
The full EP can be streamed (and downloaded for free) on SoundCloud or Bandcamp; it's definitely worth your time.
