I was first introduced to the New Zealand born rapper Louie Knuxx' when he teamed up with countrymen Fortunes on their track "Communion," which I posted about almost a year ago now.
Something about the blunt, yet starkly beautiful wordplay Knuxx wove in and amongst vocalist Connor's effortlessly soulful melodies spoke to the rap enthusiast in me, and I have followed his career ever since.
An artist with a murky past, Knuxx is open about his life, and now mentors kids who are traversing the same path he used to. His latest album Tiny Warm Hearts is a gorgeous, yet confronting listen, resplendent with trappy beats, a plethora of features and friends, and Louie's pondering rapping style holding everything together.
"Dear God, That Don't Exist" is my favourite track from the entire album, with Louie's simple yet intricate lyrics matter-of-factly playing out over excellent production by Fortunes' Barnaby, and nestled in between Connor's perfect vocal, once again. This is music that is raw, real, and just plain good.
