Why do we like this?
Guineafowl, a five-member Australian pop rock outfit, were as polished and sleek as the shiny, white Red Bull Space where they performed Tuesday night. The second of four New York shows, the band is in town for the CMJ Music Festival, seriously representing their Aussie-brand of sleek, polished pop rock. This particular event was a part of CMJ Sounds Australia, and also featured the rock 'n' roll photography of Tony Mott (complete with stories about Mick, Ozzie, and a member of Jane's Addiction grabbing Mott's package).
Guineafowl took the stage shortly after Mott's presentation, delivering a tight 6-song set of danceable, listenable tunes. Nothing about their sound is revolutionary, but their brand of peppy, hand-clapping music simultaneously evokes the lighter side of 1960s beach pop and the synth-heavy 80s throwback rampant in today's Brooklyn music scene.
Familiar, yes, but Guineafowl delivers far more effectively than many comparable acts. Their sound is tight enough to be sexy; their stage presence loose enough to be fun and utterly loveable. It also doesn't hurt that their front man has Fitzgerald-esque good looks, and isn't shy about onstage antics (see: jumping onto the drum set and launching himself into the air after giving a big-grinned shout out to his sister in the audience). All this would be good and well without such catchy memorable singles, but the fact that songs like "Little Fingers" and "In Our Circles" (off their debut EP Hello Anxiety) seriously stick in your head speaks to their staying power.
Serious skills, good looks, and good-time vibe makes Guineafowl a band to keep an eye on "” this is a group you can't help but love to love.
