Why do we like this?
Out of all the music festivals and concerts I've been to, I've never had the pleasure of seeing Starfucker live. I've heard stories, though. Stories of balloons, theatrics, LED lights, men in Gumby costumes, etc. "“ all of which boiled down to one guarantee from my fellow musical appreciators: these guys know how to throw my kind of dance party.
Arriving at Hoxton Square Bar & Kitchen in London's East End, I had my dancing shoes on (despite a recently sprained ankle) and I was ready to get to groovin'. Drinks were being poured, people were getting antsy, and the energy was keeping the sold-out venue alive. Once the band took the stage at around 9:30pm, the crowd immediately started moving their feet with excitement while screaming flattering praise towards all four members.
Starting off their set with "Malmo" from their latest Miracle Mile album, Starfucker let their audience know that they were in for a upbeat, good time with plenty of moments to let loose and show off their killer moves. Playing tracks like "Astoria" from Reptilians, "Rawnald Gregory Erickson the Second" from Jupiter and even a personal favorite cover of "Girls Just Wanna Have Fun," these dudes served up a lengthy set that had a great balance of earlier favorites and current tracks for the audience to get better acquainted with their catalog of songs.
As I looked around the crowded venue, I noticed fans of all ages were jumping around, cheering and relieving stress after a long day. It was impossible to not feel the thrill of the concert goers, their hunger for such exciting music, and the need to dance away their work week blues. As the band gave their final thank yous and left the stage, the lights went to a dirty dim signifying that the party was over and it was time to collect your shit and go home.
Looking back on the night after I've had a chance to digest it all, I have to say that Starfucker definitely has spark in more ways than one. What they lacked in theatrical party favors, like the aforementioned balloons and costumes, they made up for in general entertainment. They were an endearing bunch and their grooves were ecstatic, ultimately allowing for a night of raucous fun while bringing the house down one beat at a time.
