Sounds like:
Wilco,
Dr. Dog,
Band of Horses,
Delta Spirit
Why do we like this?
Playing from deep within the core of interlocking webs of metal at the Pritzker Pavilion at Millennium Park, My Morning Jacket (along with openers Band of Horses) presented a psychedelic set tailored for Chicago's front lawn, mixing crowd pleasing rockers with extended jam sessions and even a cover of Elton John's "Rocket Man."
After 15 years, the Louisville quintet boasts one of rock's best live shows with seeming ease. At the helm, lead singer Jim James crafts a celestial atmosphere around Patrick Hallahan's powerful beat and "Two Tone Tommy" Blankenship's centering bass grooves lathered in Carl Broemel's flowing guitar solos.
Opening with the title track of 2001's At Dawn, the band took a stroll through their catalogue. They placed heavy emphasis on their most recent release, 2011's Circuital, continuing with that album's title track before a thundering rendition of "Holdin On To Black Metal." They also played current single "Outta My System," and during an encore that nearly stretched as long as the first set, "Wonderful," and "Victory Dance."
Also included during the extended encore, the groovy "Wordless Chorus" off 2005's Z, sandwiched between "Touch Me I'm Goin To Scream Pt. 1 & 2," the bookend's of 2008's Evil Urges before closing the night on what has become their trademark tune "One Big Holiday," from 2003's It Still Moves.
Prime accompaniment to a beautiful late summer evening, My Morning Jacket's unique blend of psychedelic folk perfectly matched the modern design and laid back atmosphere of Millennium Park.
