One word to describe Lissie? Effortless. Even battling a cold, her voice ached and cracked with fervor to a sold out crowd at Chicago's Lincoln Hall last Saturday.
From nearby Rock Island, this show was a homecoming of sorts for Lissie, born Elisabeth Maurus
. Unlike her recent show in Los Angeles, whose crowd featured celebrities such as Katy Perry, this sold-out show was full of her family and high school friends.
Lissie blends pop sensibilities with well-thought-out lyrics, a passionate voice, and quality musicianship. She's also garnered extra attention for a few covers that have become popular on the blogosphere. A version of Lady Gaga's "Bad Romance" and Kid Cudi's "Pursuit of Happiness" (that's arguably better than the original) were featured as a song of the day last month.
The night featured a short set that spanned her two earlier EP's, 2007's self titled Lissie and 2009's Why You Runnin', but mainly featured songs from her 2010 debut Catching A Tiger. Highlights included the rocker "When I'm Alone," and she closed the night with the song everyone was waiting for, her cover of "Pursuit of Happiness."
