“Look Up” is the atmospheric debut single from Litche (née Sam Litchfield), an Australian producer more likely known as half of the Hawaiian/Australian duo Haliia. His debut solo offering is a richly textured slice of meditative electronica, filled with exotic samples and watery synths.
One vocal sample is distorted into fragments and scattered, so it becomes one with the plethora of percussion instruments. A soft synth is buried under the layers of rhythmic patterns, but slowly emerges to accompany the echoing nostalgic humming. The track unfurls into a hypnotic space as all of the percussive elements – pattering drums, shimmering rain sticks, thrumming bass drum and more – tangle together. It’s a simmering piece of meditative beats and distant vocals that I can imagine stretching into a longer work.
“Look Up” was started back in 2015 when Litche laid down a simple four-bar loop and vocal samples with Elias, a Swiss friend met through a mutual friend on a Bali surf trip. “Not much came out of it at that time," Litche says in a press release, "but then back in April this year I became inspired by an Ethnic sample pack I’d found and started working this with the beats and vocals Elias and I had recorded all those months ago, and it all seemed to work so well.”
