Let’s all give our ears a healthy helping of Lionlimb, a lovely new project launched by Stewart Bronaugh and Joshua Jaeger after years of road-tested bonding together first as college buddies and then as members of Angel Olsen’s backing band on her 2015 tour. Shoo is the duo’s phenomenal debut LP, a casually radiant ride through eleven expertly layered tunes brought to you by Bayonet Records.
“The record is a collection of songs Bronaugh wrote between 2012 and 2015 while living in Chicago, San Francisco, and Nashville,” which were then brought to light when he and Jaeger came together last year to tape-record them into a wholesome homemade gem of a finished product.
With soulful, jazzy touches over a psych-rock slacker core, the album’s second track and lead single “Domino” is particularly representative of how these guys bring a myriad of influences together on common lo-fi ground to create an alternative sound as warm and welcoming as any you’ll find. Jaunting drums, heavy keyboards, jazzy horns, full-bodied organs, and bluesy guitar riffs are slowly and methodically introduced behind Bronaugh’s easygoing vocals until suddenly they’re all on you at once like a euphoric multi-genre group hug, and who doesn’t like hugs? Check it out.
