The first time I heard Singaporean artist Linying was on Calan Mai's track "Mountain Mountain," but I had never familiarized myself with her solo work until I discovered this track. Her style is decidedly more atmospheric and poetic than I expected, and I'm really enjoying it.
The track is built around her clear, bright voice that cuts through pianos and cymbal washes to rise to the forefront. Beginning with only vocals and piano, it builds with the momentum of the lyrics and breaks towards the end.
She uses layered harmonies, pinpoints of electronic production, and full percussion convey her message. The line that really won me over was "my love is proud, my love is small," which is a description I think works well for her musicianship as well.
It's honest and assertive without being boastful; powerful in it's simplicity. Check out the rest of her music here.
