Why do we like this?
After making waves covering Kendrick Lamar and Justin Timberlake, the prodigal instrumentalist Sly 5th Ave is back with another installment in his cover series. Enlisting the talents of the Club Casa Orchestra, Sly goes even further by flipping Lil Wayne's "Love Me." The track goes from a catchy (albeit run-of-the-mill) synthed out slice of pop rap to something a bit more epic.
Maybe this illustrates the musicality behind some of the stuff we gloss over, or maybe it underscores the ability of the musicians at hand; either way this instrumental cover sounds downright grand. The seven instruments, brass and wind, come together in an arrangement that adds richness where there once seemed to be saccharine taste.
Sly has credited Mochilla's "Suite For Ma Dukes," which was an orchestral take on J Dilla's music, as a point of inspiration for this project, and it just begs one to consider: does hip-hop still have room to grow some 40-something years since its inception?
