Lil B has come a long way from his MySpace & Datpiff glory days, and so has rap music. Despite his impact, paving the way for many of today’s biggest names, B gave up his 13-mixtapes-a-year habit and largely retreated from the scene.
So when I saw a new Lil B track called “Still Run It,” I expected a washed-up, 2010-sounding attempt at career resurgence by reminding people he once was a rap innovator. But what is Lil B if not unpredictable?
Rather than imitate his old sounds or bite today’s hip hop trends, B asserts himself as a Bay Area rapper, not an internet rapper. His album Black Ken (the first in two years) is hyphy, 80’s pimp hip hop that stands apart from the sounds of his imitators. I may have been wary of his claims but I can now confirm: Lil B does, in fact, still run it.
