Why do we like this?
Justin Vernon, is that you? No, it's 21-year-old James Madole (aka Leaves of Green) who some of you might recognize from last year's acclaimed release, Imago. Already equipped with a solid solo album under his belt, this youngster has been honorably held in comparison to likes of Bon Iver, Elliot Smith and Grizzly Bear's Ed Droste.
Ridding himself of his solo title, Madole decided to add a full band and Grammy-winning producer Geoff Sanoff to his musical repertoire, which in return gives us "Caving In," an audibly adept track that captures the essence of his predecessors and possibly more that I can't even pin down. His falsetto starts off calm and simple with subtle guitar riffs, eventually transitioning into a luminous clamor of instrumental clashes and rocked-out ethereal soundscapes.
Leaves of Green is due to release an EP in October; until then, take a listen to "Caving In" and let your ears enter a new realm of musical odyssey.
