With a previous penchant for directing eccentric videos for the likes of David Bowie and Marilyn Manson, L.A resident Lawrence Rothman has emerged from behind the scenes to showcase his Bukowski-inspired brand of slightly unsettling, emotive R&B.
His latest track, "Fatal Attraction," while nowhere yet to be seen on his SoundCloud, premiered on
The Guardian earlier today. With an unwavering falsetto permeated by the distorted murmur of "boys don't cry," the track reminds me of the angst-ridden notes of Antony Hegarty in its melancholic authenticity. Conversely, "#1 All Time Low" (together with the excellent, yet subtly eerie "
Montauk Fling") has a far cheerier vibe to it with its infectious jungle-house-inspired composition and soft vocal washes, making for an altogether more accessible introduction to Rothman's refreshing style.
