Lauryn Hill’s 1998 hit single “Doo Wop (That Thing)” was good at the time, and now gets expertly remixed with a variety samples from the late great Nina Simone to make a record that without the wonders of modern-day technology wouldn’t exist.
The track takes on a surreal call and response structure in an almost conversational manner that grooves effortlessly into the well known chorus of “Doo Wop (That Thing)”. The lyrics cover everything from both artists political views to their more personal problems and how they are dealing with them.
Amerigo Gazaway, the producer has done a superb job of working all the Nina samples into the right key and restructuring Lauryn Hill’s classic tune to form a contemporary soul master piece from the past. Through his talent, Gazaway has exploited the gold that lies effortlessly between both Hip-Hop and soul and the past and the present.
