Sometimes I think only Kyle Morton of Portland’s beloved and many-membered Typhoon could come up with a way to romanticize the end of the world.
Bridging the gap since Typhoon’s last album in 2013 and in the face of Morton’s ongoing fight with a chronic and life-threatening illness, Morton's What Will Destroy You is a resounding rallying call to life and finding meaning while living it.
"Survivalist Fantasy" is just one of many explorations of what could be - how love might cope with different difficulties and hypothetical situations. I found, out of all the tracks on this album (which is very much a through listen), myself returning to this song over and over during the fall.
"My love, come and lie down, come and lie down with me," Morton sings earnestly, with simple guitar, piano and drums accompanying. And at the end of any given day, whether or not there will be a next, his simple request rings true.
