With just one EP to his name, Long Beach's Kwesi Foraes is already well on his way to defining himself as a truly undefinable artist. The last two singles — "Heroin" and "Pentacle 13" — released from his debut 27 EP were mostly traditional blues tracks that showcased the singer's raw and soulful voice as he fearlessly put his beating heart on display and sang about things like addiction, love, death, and revenge.
On "Spell," his latest release from the aforementioned EP, the subject matter doesn't change much; however, he takes a break from the relatively stripped back sound that he explored before and dips his toes into something new altogether — a warm pool of rock and quasi-psychedelia. The track finds a way to evoke the era-defining sound that filled the airwaves during the 60's and 70's without sounding like it's actually trying; giving the song an unmistakably modern, yet timeless aesthetic that anyone could easily appreciate.
