Why do we like this?
Earlier this week it was announced that former Mars Volta member Omar Rodriguez-Lopez and former Red Hot Chili Peppers guitarist John Frusciante were joining forces on a new project called Kimono Kult. Enlisting vocalist Teri Gender Bender (Le Butcherettes), multi-instrumentalist Nicole Turley (Swahili Blonde), guitarist Dante White, and bassist Laena Geronimo (The Like), Kimono Kult contains an incredible amount of talent.
Today the band released their first single, "Todos Menos El Dolor," an off-kilter number taken from their soon-to-be-released four-track EP, Hiding In The Light. Describing themselves as "electro/dub/Afro-beat/avant-freak/jazz-like conversations of instrumental ecstasy," you can definitely hear a multitude of genres and influences on "Todos Menos El Dolor."
Singing in Spanish, Teri Gender Bender told Rolling Stone;
It seems we can expect something quite diverse and interesting from Kimono Kult.

"Kimono Kult approaches the music in a completely original way, allowing for the imagination to flow. The lyric to "˜Todo Menos el Dolor' is for the listener's imagination. Spanish speaking or not, it goes way beyond language and [is] more about atmosphere. To me it could be a story about an alien that wanted to eat cats but it caused the critter so much pain [that] he became a vegetarian. Every interpretation is valid."
