This SXSW, don’t sleep on Space City’s Khruangbin. They might as well be the best Thai rock/funk trio you’ll ever hear. (I admittedly can’t pronounce their name without embarrassing myself, but for the record it means “engine fly” or “aeroplane” in Thailand.)
What does Thai rock sound like, you ask? In Khruangbin’s case, it sounds painfully cool. With a lifetime of listening to music, even I feel like an imposter sinking into their sounds. This magic isn’t meant for mortals.
Khruangbin’s heavily instrumental, tropical noise is addictingand has already caught the attention of some big names. Bonobo included the band’s "A Calf Born In Winter" on his 2013 Late Night Tales compilation. And Father John Misty invited the band along on a recent European tour.
While SXSW is an important festival for acts of all sizes, Khruangbin have already weathered Austin City Limits, a UK headlining tour, and the Park Stage at Glastonbury. This is just a treat for us fans, really.
Khruangbin is playing a handful of showcases over the next few days, including theSecretly SXSW Party, House of Vans showcase, and Barracuda Backyard.
