With one of the more refreshing sounds you'll hear today, Kevin Murning manages to somehow blend The Revenant soundtrack and BadBadNotGood with a field recording from one of those alien pubs in Star Wars. In fact, the whole Mode's Arp EP is good for anyone who digs a bit of Bonobo with their Math rock.
The sounds that anxiously reach out from Murning's music have a familiar textural quality to them. "Mode's Arp" is a fresh breath of electronic jazz that, by nature, is so often overlooked.
It's the 10th Quit Safari release; who are an interesting South African outfit crafting imaginative music in a scene where artists of that nature have less support than their overseas comrades and comradettes -- which to me makes it even more impressive.
