Like most artists, Kedr Livanskiy’s music is the product of her surroundings. However, growing up in post-Soviet Russia (whose claim to fame isn’t exactly its underground club music scene), she offers us a rare perspective on a lifestyle that many Americans may find shrouded in mystery or misunderstanding.
“Love & Cigarettes,” a raw, enticing house track, is the latest addition in Livanskiy’s saga of Russian culture, which she says is central to her musical inspiration. Admist the minimalist, cold repetition in her backlog, we find warm ticks of romance and hope all throughout. The title of her brilliant 2016 EP, January Sun, articulates this complicated schism.
It can be easy to let news headlines complete our worldviews, especially with dauntingly complex issues. But few things are as universally approachable as a club beat and a dancefloor. And with her second project out next month on 2MR, I look forward to seeing a little more of Livanskiy’s world.
