Over the weekend Toronto artist Kavale rolled out issue 2 and 3 of this online audio magazine Version:3. Each issue includes a new song from Kavale accompanied by a photoshoot, in what I think is quite the inventive way to get your music to the masses.
Issue 2 featured the vibrant "Sherman Oaks" and issue 3 the downbeat trap belter "New One." Both tracks showcase Kavale's wordplay and production qualities, with "Sherman Oaks" my favorite of the two. Co-produced with Jordan Lewis, Kavale references Kanye West and Kobe over thumping 808s. Kavale had this to say about the song's origin:
"This one was created while I was in California, a lot of things were going on at the moment that I needed to get off my chest. I felt with all the work I've put in to this music I deserve respect. And they will respect me."
