There's a good chance Kathryn Calder's latest single "New Millennium" will leave you wondering how this song was the one that's responsible for inspiring the synth direction of her recent self-titled solo LP.
Calder has written her share of upbeat music before, both on her own as a solo artist and as a member of the New Pornographers. But cranking up the volume, stomping the fuzz pedal, and injecting ferocity into a tempo is probably the last thing you'd expect from the singer/songwriter who gave us the infectious pop melodies of "Take A Little Time."
It's aggression without the malice or the angst, though. The track is more of a feel-good summer anthem, as opposed to an anarchist's rallying cry. Still, "New Millennium" is an undeniable torrent of high energy, a never-ending musical assault of barraging power chords and lead guitar shrills tearing its way through from beginning to end. It's not going to start a mosh pit, but that doesn't mean it'll have you standing still either.
