Like a final scene in a film which leaves us misty eyed and full of hope before diving into the end credits, "Numbers" is a spirit-lifting, electronica-tinged track that's cinematic, complex, and perfect.
It's perfect because it fits in all the quadrants of a good pop song: great vocal hooks that are memorable; grandiose percussion; and a well executed array of accompaniments that have a specific intention to make the listener 'feel.' It's easy for a pop song to meet the criteria, but it's incredibly difficult to do it and not feel like it's sterile or cookie cutter.
There's a certain level of darkness in the track which contrasts the very bubbly, almost cheesy M83-lite atmosphere which elevates the track and gives it class. Its electrifyingly poignant lyrics, under the surface, give a darker context for the dreamy vibe. Asking us not just to look at how time passes us by, but alluding to the idea that our life lessons multiply depending on the amount of seconds we get, the track dips into more cerebral songwriting to complement its pop sensibilities.
Beautiful, inspired, and unapologetic in its tone, KAPTAN's "Numbers" is worth every second of its existence. And it needs to play over the end credits of something immediately.
